MIT Launches New Option for Majoring in Environmental Studies

November 1, 2003
Beginning with the 2003-2004 academic year, the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences is offering Environmental Science SB degree program, the first of its kind at MIT. Unlike environmental studies programs at many other universities, the MIT program -- "Science of Earth's Environment" or SeE -- focuses on the application of fundamental quantitative sciences and the emerging science of complexity to understand the environment of Earth and to inform sound environmental policy. In addition to developing a broad foundation in mathematics, science, and policy, students in the SeE program deepen their education by specialization in biology, chemistry, or earth science.

We are pleased to welcome our first two students in the inaugural year of this program, sophomores Emma Bassein and Melanie Michalak, and look forward to seeing more students coming into the program as the year progresses. For more information about majoring in SeE at MIT, please send e-mail to eapsinfo@mit.edu or call (617)253-3380.
