An Introduction to Procedural Textures
in KPT Bryce

-----------------------------------

A texture in Bryce is a thing to be savored like a rich dessert--the flavor is complex and intense. We invite you follow this text closely to deepen your appreciation of textures and how to make them in KPT Bryce. Please also read with an eye towards contributing your understanding and discoveries to all of us.
A texture in Bryce is like a table that gives a color to each part of an object based on position, orientation, and several other aspects of the object and the surrounding scene. When you create a texture, you do not fill in a table explicitly, rather, you define a step-by-step method (procedure) for determining the color based on the aforementioned particulars.
The controls Bryce offers for defining a texture are like a restaurant combination platter, i.e. you can pick one dish from Column A, one from Column B, etc. The next page contains descriptions of the buttons in the "Deep Texture Explorer." To access these dialogs take the following steps: (1) Select an object in a Bryce scene; (2) Select "Edit Material..." from the "Objects" menu; (3) Set the texture to 3D Solid; (4) Hold down the option key and click "Edit Texture...". Go ahead and push the button (forget the option key) to get to the next page.
