No Textures or Pictures as Textures

You really don't even need textures to create great images in Bryce. Here is an image consisting of a textureless terrain, some purple fog, and some colorful sky.

Not all that bad for no textures, except those for the sky. Okay, let's try using pictures as textures. Basically, you can take any picture and use it as a texture. Here's a very simple example:

We used three pictures, bricks for the wall, cobblestones for the courtyard, and a tree, mapped onto four planes to create the image.

In order to use pictures as images you must save the requisite image in PICT format; select 2D Pict from the Materials Editor; and click on "Edit Texture". Next open your PICT and apply it to your object. You should include all of the PICTS you intend to use for a particular scene in the same list (The Explorers Guide for Bryce tells you all about it, so we won't go into it here, unless the hoards demand it!!). We used an alpha channel for the tree after inverting it; that is, we selected Alpha transparent on the Materials Editor dialog window This takes everything that is black in our image and makes it completely transparent. Just imagine what you can do with this.
Pretend you are a top-notch fashion designer who wants to design landscapes rather than clothes, say....because you're feeling omnipotent. Here's what you might come up with:
